The Best Things To Do in DC If You Love Art



If you're a fan of the arts (mostly the painting, drawing kind), here's a great way to spend 24 hours in Washington, DC. We've taken care of the planning, so you can just follow along and relax!




8 AM Enjoy a lazy breakfast at A Baked Joint



This large, airy bakery/cafe from Baked & Wired's owners serves gourmet sandwiches, toasts, and more. We recommend the Nutella toast, but really you can't go wrong with anything.

10 AM Begin your visit at the National Gallery of Art

The National Gallery of Art in Washington DC is a must visit if you have any interest in American or European art. The east building is more modern art. And don't forget to see the blue chick on the roof. And take a nice jaunt through the sculpture garden. If you're visiting on a weekend, participate in the drawing salon! Or if you're visiting on a Friday night during the summer check out Jazz in the Garden.



11:45 Pick up a sandwich at On The Rye (and take it to your next stop!) 

This is a modern sandwich shop Inspired by the Jewish Deli. We recommend the the Turkey Reuben or the Pastrami "Bacon" P.L.T.

12 PM Head to the National Portrait Gallery 

Experience portraiture beyond the frame. The collections here present people of remarkable character and achievement. The National Portrait Gallery is a historic art museum founded in 1962 and opened to the public in 1968, it is part of the Smithsonian Institution. It's a favorite because of all the presidential portraits! Eat your lunch in the stunning Kogod courtyard.


1:30 PM Walk over to The National Museum of Women in the Arts. Be sure to walk through DC's beautiful City Center pathway as you make your way over. (And if you need a snack pick up some birthday cake balls at Milk.)

This is "the only major museum in the world solely dedicated" to celebrating women’s achievements in the visual, performing, and literary arts. There are three floors, and the first floor has a small gallery.


 2:30 PM Head to The Renwick Gallery (& Stop for a White House Selfie)

The Renwick Gallery is a branch of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, located in Washington, D.C., and focuses on American craft and decorative arts from the 19th to the 21st century. It's one of the smallest museums with two tiny floors. Bonus: it's right across the street from the White House, so you can hit two great spots at the same time.


3:30 PM Head to Dupont Underground 

The Dupont Underground comprises 75,000 sq.ft. of repurposed infrastructural space less than a mile from the White House. It lies beneath the city’s iconic Dupont Circle, a nexus of Washington’s cultural, civic, and commercial life. Be sure to get your tickets early, because these exhibits sell out quickly. It can be a little dusty and dark (and no elevators down), so have your iPhone flashlight handy if you'd like extra light.



5:00 PM Visit The Phillips Collection (and maybe catch The Phillips After Five on the first Thursday of every month) 

Encounter superb works of modern art in an intimate setting at The Phillips Collection, opened to the public in 1921 in Washington’s vibrant Dupont Circle neighborhood. Paintings by Renoir and Rothko, Bonnard and O'Keeffe, and van Gogh are among the many stunning impressionist and modern works that fill the museum. Its distinctive building combines extensive new galleries with the former home of its founder, Duncan Phillips. The galleries may be explored in any order, since works of art are not organized by category or time period. By far the highlight is "The Luncheon of the Boating Party," which is an absolute must see for anyone in DC.


7:00 PM Try your hand at art yourself, with a class at The Lemon Bowl 

A shared work space in Washington D.C. where the city’s creative and curious gather to teach and learn new DIY skills. The instructors are friendly and create a very comfortable, fun atmosphere.


2. or See a show at The John F. Kennedy Center 

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is a magnificent performing arts center located on the Potomac River, adjacent to the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C Be sure to catch the awe-inspiring sights of the city and Georgetown on the upstairs terrace.

Pro tip: If you want to slow-poke your day and spend some time meandering, drop Dupont Underground, The National Museum of Women in the Arts, and The Phillips Collection.
